As the enforcement of the new International Maritime Organisation 2020 Low Sulphur Regulation (LSR) kicks in, Barr. Hassan Bello Executive secretary/ CEO Nigeria shippers council in a media chat with journalist noted that the agency will work with IMO make sure the cost arising from IMO2020 regulation is mitigated.
The new regulations, known as IMO 2020, mandates a maximum sulphur content of 0.5% in marine fuels globally. The driver of this change is the need to reduce the air pollution created in the shipping industry by reducing the Sulphur content of the fuels that ships use.
Speaking further, he noted that African nations at the council of IMO is disproportionate to the size of the continent’s representation at the global maritime body. he also noted that IMO in developing her regulation need to consult with stakeholders to reflect the implication of cost.
